It’s that time of year again. The time when you get together with friends and family, stuff your faces, share laughs, and say what you’re thankful for. Whether it be a family gathering or a potluck with friends, you should make an attempt to bring something to Thanksgiving dinner. Here are just a few ideas of things to bring to Thanksgiving with loved ones.
If you’re having a potluck style Thanksgiving, make sure you have coordinated with the group to find out who is bringing the turkey. A Thanksgiving meal would just not be complete without one. Maybe try and pitch in for one if it is too expensive for one person to handle.
2. Cheese platter
If you’re going to a function where you know there will be a full spread of food, try bringing an appetizer. It will allow the guests to have something to munch on while dinner is still being prepared. Also, it gives you something to eat while you patiently wait for everyone to be ready to eat. A cheese platter is a good option. Who doesn’t like cheese?
3. Something sweet
Dessert is always a good idea. Whether you decide on a traditional pumpkin pie, apple crisp, cupcakes, or a tart of some sorts, desserts never disappoint. Everyone will be stuffed from the turkey and the mash but there is always room for dessert. Always.
Candles are a nice way to set the mood. If you are having a dinner with just your significant other, it can really spice things up. Even if you’re having a family dinner, candles are a nice way to show your host appreciation. Their home might smell like freshly baked cookies now, but it won’t a week later. Your cookie scented candles will come in handy.
Flowers are a nice way to spruce up the dining table. It adds an elegant touch and works well as a centrepiece. Flowers are a nice way to add something different since most people will probably bring food or wine. A nice fall bouquet will make everything feel more festive.
Not a lot of people will think of this because you will just assume that your host has coffee and tea but you could try bringing a special coffee/tea that they may not have. Maybe you’ve travelled somewhere recently or have a special blend you think they will enjoy. You could also bring hot cocoa and marshmallows for the kids.
7. Bottle of Wine
Of course, a bottle of wine is always a safe option. Ask if your host has a preference of of white or red. If you’re having a friendsgiving, I’m sure it won’t matter. They will just be happy with free alcohol. Typically, a pinot noir pairs well with turkey as it enhances and goes along well with the turkey and stuffing flavours. You don’t have to play by the books though. Maybe you could bring an ice wine for dessert instead.
We can’t forget about entertainment for the night! Yes, talking is nice but it’s always nice to have options. Bring a few DVDs or boardgames to keep everyone entertained. If there are kids, they will be happier if they have something to do (other than running around). You will be happier as well as you won’t have to constantly tell them to slow down so they don’t knock things over.
Maybe you’re the designated photographer and this is all that’s expected of you at holiday gatherings. So don’t forget to bring your camera. It’s nice to live in the moment but it’s also nice to capture those moments to look back on. Your kids may object and pose begrudgingly but one day they will thank you for it.
If you really can’t decide on something to bring, just bring yourself. If you’ve already asked your host multiple times if you need to bring something and they really insist on nothing, just bring your presence. This is usually the case in family gatherings. All they really expect is for you to show up and have a good time.
