If you have ever lived in a college dorm room or a downtown apartment, you know what it’s like to try to make a small room your own space. From bedrooms that can barely fit a bed or a dining room that is cramped with a table and chairs, there are easy ways to make a small space appear bigger. Make your space not only look bigger, nicer, more inviting and decorative with these simple tips!
1. Use light hues as wall colors.
Dark colors or dark accent walls may look warm and cozy, they don’t reflect light. Use light hues on your walls so that the light can reflect off and make your space look brighter and bigger.
2. Strategically place mirrors around the room.
Place mirrors in your room to create the illusion of space. Whether this is a mounted mirror in your living room or mirrored closet doors, it will give an appearance of extra depth through the reflection.
3. Make use of hidden storage space.
Use of storage space is extremely important in small spaces. The last thing you want is to clutter your room with things. Pick up an ottoman which can be used for storage, as a table or as an extra seat for your guests.
4. Use glass or lucite furniture.
Glass or Lucite items will make your our room feel more spacious because you can see right through them (literally). Fool your eyes into thinking that your room is bigger than it actually is.
5. Buy furniture that is propped up with legs.
Like the glass furniture, get a sofa that is propped up on legs rather than one that lays flat on the ground. It will create the illusion of space because you will be able to see right from one end of the room to the other.
6. Use pocket doors or room dividers.
Look for alternative door. Yes, yes it sounds weird but if you replace your doors with pocket doors (that slide open) or room dividers, you can easily create a more open feel and make the room less bulky.
7. An elevated bed in your bedroom can open up space.
If you have a relatively small bedroom, it can get quite frustrating when it comes to space. Try elevating your bed so you have extra room underneath. The downside with this is that you need high ceilings for it to work successfully.
8. Don’t fill up exposed shelves.
Completely stacking your shelves, especially larger ones, will crowd your room. Stagger your items or, if you need to use the shelving, organize your bits and bobs by color. It will make the room look way nicer and double up as some art.
9. Buy a striped rug or bed sheets.
Adding a striped rug or striped bed sheets to your room will elongate it and act as an easy fix to a cramped space.
10. Get big pieces of furniture and big art work.
Just because your space is small, doesn’t mean you can’t get a little dramatic. Add a large piece of artwork on the wall to give a cool twist but also make the room seem larger.
