So you binged on delicious holiday treats and feel guilty about all that extra weight? Don’t! It’s okay to binge, don’t beat yourself up. The holidays are the best time to catch up with friends and family. Snuggling on the couch while eating leftover stuffing is a normal thing to do and you don’t have anything to feel guilty about! Here are a few ways to help you lose that holiday weight.
1. Continue Eating Regular Meals
You might feel like skipping meals but this is worse than binge eating. Starving yourself is probably the worst way to lose weight. Maybe, you can cut down on eating out at restaurants but continue to eat healthy regular meals. It’s a bonus if you include plenty of fruits and veggies in your meal. A high protein breakfast is a great way to satisfy your appetite through the whole day. A simple breakfast recipe you can whip up in minutes :
Scrambled Eggs with Chillies
Calories – 194 per serving
- 2 large eggs, plus 1 large egg white
- Few drops of cooking oil
- Pinch of salt and pepper
- 1 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
- 6 cherry tomatoes, halved (2.5 oz)
- 1 scallion, thinly sliced
- Vigorously whisk the eggs, egg white, and salt and pepper in a bowl.
- Heat a small skillet over medium-low heat. When hot, coat lightly with oil. Cook chopped chilies and tomatoes until soft (2 minutes). Add eggs. Cook, stirring gently, until eggs are cooked through, as desired (1-2 minutes).
- Sprinkle with scallion. Serve hot.
2. Cut Down on Alcohol
Alcohol, as you can see, is high on calories. Those delicious cocktails and spiked eggnogs pack more calories than a slice of cheesy pizza! Don’t reach for the sodas either, those are equally bad. It’s best to stick to water with slices of fruit in it or you can even make a nutritious smoothie to curb those alcohol cravings. - 1/2 cup of cranberries
- 1/2 cup of baby spinach
- 1 sweet red apple, peeled and chopped
- 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1/2 cup of cold water
- 5 ice cubes
Wash all ingredients. Prepare and blend on high until smooth. Enjoy!
3. Stay Hydrated
This is probably the oldest trick in the book – drink plenty of water! Water makes you feel full and helps control binging. After the holidays, you might have a tendency to eat more than you normally do. This is probably because it is hard to shake off the cravings for some greasy chicken or maybe a casserole. If you feel hungry during the day, just grab some water. You can even make it interesting by adding some mint leaves and lemon slices in your water.
Try adopting these simple steps mentioned into your routine:
- Drink 2 glasses of water after waking up – Helps activate your internal organs.
- Drink 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal – Helps with digestion.
- Drink 1 glass of water before/after taking a shower – Helps maintain blood pressure levels.
- Drink 3 glasses of water at random intervals during the day – Makes you feel full.
- Drink 1 glass of water before sleeping – Helps avoid heart problems.
4. Dessert Detox
All those pies and cakes add on sugar and fat. It’s time to give a rest to those sugar cravings and go on a simple dessert detox. Don’t stay away from sweet treats completely but limit them to a very small portion. Do this for at least one week post the holiday binge. Sugar is addictive and it’s hard to beat the cravings, but an easy method is sipping on some green tea or a sugar-free lemonade. Crunchy Chocolate Biscotti
Calories – 50 per serving
- 3 egg whites
- 1/3 cup(s) vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoon(s) coffee
- 1 teaspoon(s) vanilla extract
- 1 2/3 cup(s) all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup(s) sugar
- 1/2 cup(s) unsweetened cocoa
- 1 teaspoon(s) baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon(s) baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
- 1/3 cup(s) hazelnuts or other nuts, chopped and toasted
- 1/3 cup(s) dried tart cherri
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease large cookie sheet.
- In a small bowl, beat together egg whites, oil, coffee, and vanilla.
- In a large bowl, stir together flour and remaining ingredients until well mixed. Pour egg mixture onto dry ingredients and stir until combined. Shape mixture into two 12″ by 1″ logs; place both on cookie sheet and flatten slightly. Bake 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes.
- Transfer one log to cutting board. Slice diagonally into scant 1/2-inch-thick biscotti. Arrange biscotti, cut side up, on cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining log, using a second cookie sheet if necessary.
- Bake 20 minutes. Transfer to wire rack to cool. Serve with strawberries in a tea cup.
- Can be stored in an airtight jar for up to 1 month.
5. Think Healthy And Be Patient
You might tend to feel bloated post the holidays even though you haven’t really gained too much weight. Psychologist Sandrine Baptiste in her book, suggests that telling yourself that you’re “fat” or “flabby” will only decrease your weight loss process and also might lead to depression. Maintain a positive outlook and continue your fitness regime even if you don’t see visible results right away. Patience is key, and your mindset will have drastic effects on whether you lose weight or not. It might seem like a struggle at first but you know what they say – Rome wasn’t built in a day!
