5 Tips on Keeping Your Summer Skin Hydrated

Summer’s high temperatures, humidity levels and intense UV radiation can affect your skin hydration. Not to mention the dryness of air conditioning and being at the beach and pool all day! We’ve collected a list of five essential steps to take in order to maintain that beautiful skin hydrated.

5. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

Why: Remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells that are asking to be let go! Exfoliation also helps improve blood circulation, especially to the face.

How: It’s important to exfoliate at least two or three times a week. Add a couple pinches of brown sugar into your favourite body wash alongside coconut oil, olive oil, aloe, or honey.

4. Skip the longer shower

Why: Long hot showers and baths strip the skin of moisture and also washes away protective oils in the skin.

How: Limit showers to 10 minutes and keep the water at a cooler temperature. Opt for cool and short sprays! Don’t forget to moisturize when your skin is damp, right after your shower.

3. Maintain a well-balanced diet

Why: The skin is an overall reflection of your health. A good diet will provide the body with its required vitamins and nutrients, the basis for healthy looking skin.

How: Eating foods like fresh fruits, and green vegetables that are high in water content, fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The fluids from these fruits and veggies are more easily absorbed by the cells of your skin than drinking water! Consider picking up cucumber, grapefruits and grapes the next time you’re getting groceries. Also consider increasing your intake of supplements like vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and selenium as they help retain more moisture in skin cells.

2. Keep your lips moisturized

Why: Sunlight increases the signs of aging around your lips, with a worst case scenario of increasing your risk of skin cancer.

How: Make sure to use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 regularly and generously whenever you’re exposed to the sun, in order to protect the skin of your lips from the damaging effects of UV rays. Don’t forget that you can also exfoliate your lips with a sugar scrub or even use your toothbrush!

1. Moisturize your skin and repeat

Why: Soft and supple skin is all about maintaining hydration! Moisturizing everyday ensures long lasting hydration in your summer skin.

How: Look for Hyaluronic acid in your moisturizer as it plays a major role in the rejuvenation of skin through the regulation of tissue repair in your skin. Hyaluronic acid actually holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water so this thing is a SUPER moisturizer. Also make sure to use water-based moisturizers as part of a morning routine, and nutrient and oil filled products as a night routine.

Asides from these five tips, don’t forget to drink plenty of water!
