8 Movies We’re Excited For This Month: November 2014

Movies come out every weekend, and some pass us by, while others get marked down as some of the greatest in all of time. If you can remember the first time you watched a movie, you probably can reminisce on the excitement you felt as you went along with the protagonist throughout the journey of a lifetime — one that can only exist in your wildest imaginations. While books may be the brick and mortar of storytelling, the technology of movie-making has advanced enough now that you can become fully immerse in a false reality. We are here to bring that sense of adventure back. Watch a movie once a month, and you’ll realize how us movie-lovers truly feel when we discover “the One”.

Here are some movies you should check out this month. Some are known worldwide and you’ve probably heard about them months before, due to all the heavy marketing. Some are more indie, more limited in release, and can be only found in certain countries or theatres. Whichever the type of movie-lover you are, you must be sure to check out these eight movies. We are not going to provide the trailers for any of these because sometimes watching a trailer can ruin the movie experience. It’s best to go in without any expectation just so you can get the full story out of them!

1. Big Hero 6

Release date: November 7th, 2014

We’re excited to see what Disney has to offer next with this movie (which is coming out today, in fact). It has been marketed really well and has already gotten high ratings from the critics that were at the premiere. The graphics are going to be out of this world, as we have read that Disney built a completely new engine to render the movie. This movie is a Disney-plot kind of film where a young boy who is a robo-genius, works with his friends and his closet companion — a robot named Baymax, to solve a mystery that has been unfolding in San Francisco. The plot may not be original, but like all Disney movies, we expect it to be a hit with the family.

2. Interstellar

Release date: November 7th, 2014

You probably have seen the posters of this movie being hung around subway stations and malls. We’re excited because the cast looks amazing. The lead actor Matthew McConaughey is backed up by leading actress Anne Hathaway. and Jessica Chastain (from Zero Dark Thirty). Did we forget to mention that it’s directed by Christopher Nolan? This movie is about “the world coming to an end, and the only way for humankind to survive is to make a journey out into space to seek a future in the stars”. It definitely sounds like something we’d seek in a thrilling sci-fi.

3. The Theory of Everything

Release date: November 7th, 2014

This is one of the rare gems that TIFF has presented to us this year. This is a biographical piece about the famous Stephen Hawking when he was young. At 21 years old, he fell in love with a fellow Cambridge student named Jane Wilde, and together, they surpass the burdens of his neurological disease. Have you wondered why Stephen Hawking is such a genius and has lived so long, and has done what doctors have considered “the impossible”? Watch this heartwarming and beautiful film to find out.

4. Foxcatcher

Release date: November 14th, 2014

Ahh, as if you’ve had enough of topless Channing Tatum already (who are we kidding?) — here’s more. This is a truly inspiring movie about someone who has pushed himself from poverty to greatness, while battling forces that struggle to push him down. Based off a real story about the journey of wrestler Mark Schultz, an Olympic Gold metal wrestler, who comes from a life of poverty and shadowed by the greatness of his brother. We think this will will definitely be a heartstring-tugging tear-jerker.

5. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Release date: November 21st, 2014

The Hunger Games series have had people on their seats since the first movie came out. Based off of the popular book by Suzanne Collins, we are headed towards the first of the trilogy’s finale, where Katniss will have to decide to end the “games” once and for all. Does she chose the devoted Peeta or will she choose her longtime sweetheart Gale? If you haven’t watched the first and second movie, then you should check them out. Everyone will say it’s similar to the Japanese movie Battle Royale, but with less violence. If you’re the type to like some action thriller mixed in with some gushing teenage-romance, this will be your movie.

6. The Imitation Game

Release date: November 21st, 2014

The hype for this movie isn’t as big as the others, but Norwegian director Morten Tyldum does not fail in delivering what is expected to be a suspenseful and engrossing historical film.  Starring Benedict Cumberpatch and Keira Knightley, we follow the story (based off real history) of a “British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist” whose job is to crack to inscriptions used by German forces in order for the Allies to win WWII.

7. V/H/S: Viral

Release date: November 21st, 2014

Here’s one for the horror enthusiasts or for those who want a bit of a scare after Halloween. This suspenseful indie horror film offers a contemporary premises of sharing and social media. Taken from a first person perspective (much like the Blair Witch Project), a town is struck by a police chase after a derange ice cream truck, and people have come out with their phones to try and capture a viral video. What they don’t know is that something has taken ahold of people who capture these videos and “soon the discovery becomes that they themselves are the stars of the next video, one where they face their own death.” We expect to be on the edge of our seats the entire time, and we don’t recommend this for the weak-hearted.

8. Horrible Bosses 2

Release date: November 26th, 2014

horrible bosses 2

Let’s end this list on a lighter note! The crazy and hilarious trio (Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis) are back from the first Horrible Bosses and they’re scheming for their next big kidnapping. They have brought back Jennifer Anniston and Kevin Spacey as well. What we do expect is a few laughs, but will it live up to the original? Let’s just hope it doesn’t go downhill like The Hangover did. We’re guessing there won’t be many plots to spoil with this one, but we’re most likely going for the jokes anyway, amiright?
