Cold season is back in all its sniffling, congesting, and coughing glory. You’ve tried all you can to prevent yourself from getting ill, but somehow that pesky cold managed to plague your life. This means you need to up your arsenal. Move over Vicks and Buckleys, here are 10 cold remedies from around the world.
Lemon and Black Pepper
Sounds weird, but it is an effective way to soothe your cough. Take a ripe lemon and cut it in half. Slightly hollow it out and then sprinkle some black pepper inside of it. When necessary, suck on the lemon. This should soothe your cough.
Turmeric and Milk
Turmeric has been famous for its antibacterial properties meaning it can beat the crap out of your cold. It is usually used in India cooking to add a lovely flavour. This mix is another way to soothe that pesky cough. Mix 1/4 cup of warm milk with a teaspoon of turmeric. It will taste a bit bitter but will be efficient in alleviating your cough.
Oregano oil was claimed to be made by a goddess. It is antimicrobial and antibacterial meaning it will kill bad bacteria in your body. Oregano oil helps with the treatment and prevention of colds. It can also be used for bloating and fatigue. To consume the oregano oil, use 3-5 drops and mix with 1/4 cup of water. Oregano oil is potent so be careful because it can burn your mouth. Consume this mixture 3 times daily.
Garlic has been used in Egypt for centuries. Because of allicin – an antibacterial component in garlic – it is widely used for the treatment of the cold and flu. One way to use the garlic is to heat it up with a cup of milk. Tastes weird, but helps with cold like symptoms. The second method is to create a broth. Slice a whole onion and several cloves of garlic and allow it to simmer for 15 minutes. It is recommended to consume this broth 3 times a day to yield maximum results.
Brace yourself for this one. If you have a sore throat, this drink will help soothe it. Heat 1/2 cup of milk with a tablespoon of unsalted butter. While that is heating, whisk an egg yolk with a tablespoon of sugar or honey to sweeten it. When the milk has warmed (not piping hot) combine the mixture and consume.
Referred to as the bush cure because it uses natural herbs found in the wild. This tea will soothe you sinuses and help fight your cold. Boil one cup of water. To this, add 4 lemon slices with the juice from half of it, 1 lime, 2 garlic cloves (crushed), and 1 crushed ginger root. To sweeten, use honey.
Tea and Bath
This remedy is said to be effective because it allows you to steam out the toxins. This effective method helps to relieve sore throats and sinuses. Place a cup of water in a pot to boil. Add cut ginger root and slices of orange rind. Try to get organic oranges or ones that have no pesticides on them. Boil for 15 minutes. Set a hot bath and pour some Epsom salts in it. Drink the tea while in the bath. This should alleviate your symptoms.
Chinese Menthol Crystals
Can’t breathe? Feeling congested? Try these menthol crystals. Boil some water and pour into a basin. Next add a couple crystals. You DO NOT need a lot because they are truly potent. Lower your face close to the basin and inhale. You will immediately feel your respiratory system clear.
