Emma Watson, 24, has be named a goodwill ambassador of the organization UN Women by the United Nations. She will be working under the HeForShe campaign in order to promote gender equality and empowerment of young women. Watson had previously participated in humanitarian work in Bangladesh and Zambia in order to promote girls’ education. “The engagement of young people is critical for the advancement of gender equality in the 21st century and I am convinced that Emma’s intellect and passion will enable UN Women’s messages to reach the hearts and minds of young people globally” said Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Watson is known for playing the character Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movie franchise and is well loved by her fans. As an advocate of the campaign, Watson’s work will be able to reach the minds of the young in order to generate a movement that brings all genders together in order to raise awareness of gender inequality.
“Being asked to serve as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador is truly humbling,” said Watson, “The chance to make a real difference is not an opportunity that everyone is given and is one I have no intention of taking lightly. Women’s rights are something so inextricably linked with who I am, so deeply personal and rooted in my life that I can’t imagine an opportunity more exciting. I still have so much to learn, but as I progress I hope to bring more of my individual knowledge, experience and awareness to this role.”
The recent Brown University graduate is also a smartie besides just being a talented and gorgeous actor. At one point in her academic career, Watson even considered leaving behind acting in order to continue pursuing higher education. We know for sure that Emma Watson will put her education and influence to good use once she begins her new duties as a UN ambassador.
Her net of influence is obviously demonstrated by the crash of the UN Women’s website soon after the reveal of her new position. Watson’s new role continues the legacy left behind by other celebrity ambassadors including, Charlize Theron, Drew Barrymore and Angelina Jolie.
