Make Your Own Pho At Home: Our Homemade Pho Recipe

Pho has been the go to drunken comfort meal for many years. Not only is it delicious after a night at the club, a steaming bowl of your favorite pho really hits the spot in the winter. Pho is a popular street food in Vietnam and has taken North America by storm. If you haven’t tried homemade pho, you are missing out. Contrary to what you normally get in Pho restaurants, homemade pho is way healthier and more fragrant (you won’t have all that MSG!) This is a great authentic, homemade recipe that will fulfill your pho cravings.

Ingredients:

  • 7-10 star anise seeds
  • 3-4 cardamom pods
  • 10 full black peppercorns
  • Rice noodles
  • A chunk of rock sugar
  • 1 onion
  • 1-2 knob of ginger
  • 1-2 sticks of cinnamon
  • 7 cloves
  • Beef bones/oxtail (or anything with lots of bone marrow)
  • Any type of meat that is sliced thin (Ex. Tai beef)

Optional:

  • Bean sprouts
  • Lime
  • Fish sauce

Preparing the onion/ginger:

  1. Cut up the ginger in cubes
  2. Cut up the onion in quarters
  3. Put onion and ginger on the grill and char it

Making the soup:

  1. In a teaball/cheese cloth combine the cinnamon, cloves, star anise seeds, cardamom and black peppercorns.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil on med-high heat
  3. Add the teaball, onion, ginger and oxtail/beef bones
  4. Allow to simmer on low-medium heat for 4 hours
  5. Stir occasionally and skim any residue, but do not stir or skim in the last half hour
  6. With 15 minutes left, add the rock sugar

Prepping:

  1. Boil water and add salt
  2. Put noodles in when water begins to boil
  3. When noodles are cooked, strain the noodles and cool

Putting it together:

  1. Mix noodles and soup when you serve
  2. Put in tai beef
  3. Season the with the fish sauce to your liking
  4. Season with salt and pepper to your taste
  5. Garnish with cilantro, green onion, lime and bean sprouts
  6. EAT!
