Lions, tigers, bears – oh my! Everyone’s familiar with the nursery rhyme that they heard in kindergarten, but now it has a practical application!

We shell out big bucks on torn jeans all the time, so why not buy them with a purpose? Now you can buy a pair of torn jeans from Zoo Jeans and help give back at the same time. Not the company to designed them, but to the animals that actually made the tears into the fabric.

A Tokyo executive came up with an idea to give back to the zoo after visiting it as a child. With the help of the Mineko Club, a volunteer group of zoo supporters, an initiative was created to revivify the zoo.

The Kamine Zoo in Hitachi, Japan designed these jeans by wrapping denim around tires and toys and then throwing them into the the animals’ pens. The animals are then allowed to have a go at the toys until the denim is shredded and they become bored.

So just how did the jeans turn out?

From there, the items of clothing are put together into a more recognizable form, jeans. With three different styles to choose from, you’re sure to find a pair that matches your liking. The best part is that you’ll never have to worry about someone else having the same design as you since each piece is unique (we know you hate looking like you stole someone else’s style).

Or you could always make up a story along the lines of “Oh I was fighting a tiger just casually, no big”, because that always works too.

All of the styles were then auctioned on the internet to the highest bidder, where one of the styles reached a bid of $1,200. The proceeds were then collected and will be used to help preserve the wildlife of these animals. Part of the proceeds from the auction also went to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
