What do you get when you mix modern magazine covers with classic pieces of artwork? Eisen Bernardo’s own masterpieces.

While the 29-year-old artist, who is based in the Philippines, is also a graphic designer and children’s book illustrator, he seems to be using magazine covers in his latest works entitled Mag + Art.

While previous artists have combined the modern and classical concept by recapturing images with the use of celebrities, Bernardo takes his work to a whole different level.

In his work, Bernardo plasters modern day magazine covers (with iconic celebrities) onto an iconic painting, then makes sure to include an artistic filter or brush stroke texture to make the images blend.

Although his work seems simplistic in its technicality, and the images juxtaposed are centuries apart, their combination provides an interesting piece of work that seems more cohesive than distant.

For Bernado, he admitted that he felt present magazine covers were inspired by classical artworks, especially when it comes to the artistic portrayal of nudity. His collection aims to question whether the ideology of beauty has evolved or whether there are still similarities in modern times.

As he told BoredPanda, his “ongoing project on Tumblr is my way of giving homage to the magazines – as venue of human artistic expression and vehicle of popular culture.”

And while not all viewers may know the famous paintings of Picasso, Boticelli, and Klimt, the faces of Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Ryan Gosling, Robin Williams, Princess Diana, Meryl Streep, Megan Fox, and Gwen Stefani (to name a few), will definitely be familiar to the audience.
