Here at Destination Femme we’re all for eating healthy in order to keep your body happy. But sometimes the best food for you are the most expensive ones. So we’re here to help you stay your healthiest while keeping your bank account happy as well. If you’re looking for something healthy as opposed to vegetables, granola is a great step into the foray of health foods. It adds a new texture to your dish, can be used in both sweet and savory recipes and is easily customized to whatever your taste buds are craving. We’ll give you the basics of how to make a simple granola and then provide you with some alternatives to customize the final outcome to your liking.
The first thing you’re going to want to do is measure out 6 cups of rolled oats, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Mix all of these ingredients together in a large bowl and ensure that the cinnamon and salt is evenly distributed. Start preheating your oven so that by the time you’re ready to cook the granola, the oven is ready to go. Set the temperature to 275 degrees F.
Tip: If you want to add any dried fruits (ex. raisins, cranberries, etc.) or nuts (ex. pine nuts, walnuts, etc.) this is the step where you want to incorporate them. There is no exact measurement as to how much of each additional ingredient you should incorporate, just leave it up to your taste buds. If you want the flavor to be stronger, incorporate more, if you want a small explosion of flavor, throw in a little.
The next thing you want to do is to measure out 3/4 of a cup of honey and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Add the wet and dry ingredients together in your bowl and mix thoroughly. Make sure that all of the dry ingredients are coated with the honey or else your granola won’t stick together.
Once everything has been evenly mixed, take your spatula and spread out the mixture over a baking sheet. Try to spread it out as evenly as possible or you will run the risk of the thinner areas cooking faster and burning. If you’re worried about the granola sticking to your baking sheet, try wiping the sides down with a little bit of olive oil before you put anything into the pan. This will help with the removal process and you won’t have any leftover pieces of granola going to waste.
If everything is thoroughly mixed, slide your baking sheet into the oven and let it cook for 30 minutes. At this point, take the granola out and give it a quick stir so that everything cooks properly. Then put the sheet back into the oven for another 20-25 minutes. Make sure that you check on the granola frequently because once it starts to cook, it can burn pretty quickly. Once your granola is a nice golden brown color, you can take it out and let it cool.
Tip: If you prefer larger chunks of granola try not to stir it too much when you take it out. Allow the whole tray to cool down and then break it up into larger chunks once you’re ready to take it out of the pan.
What can you do with the granola?
If you’re unsure as to what to do with the granola, it can either be eaten alone or added to other dishes. Try throwing some granola into your salads to incorporate protein or add a nice crunch. If you’re a fan of cold foods and yogurt, mix it in with some fruits to make a parfait. If you prefer to eat it as a meal, put some granola into a bowl with fresh fruit and pour almond milk over top for a refreshingly healthy breakfast.
