By now we’re all familiar with the annual color forecast released by the famed Pantone and the influence it has on everyday consumerism. But what exactly goes into the decision making process of deciding on a “color of the year“?
The announced color of the year for 2015 is Marsala, a dusty terracotta red with hints of orange and warm browns. Alongside declaring each year’s official color, Pantone also releases a capsule collection with Sephora as well.
In the previous years, the Sephora + Pantone Universe collaborations with shade of Radiant Orchid (2014) and Emerald (2013) can only take you so far in terms of cosmetics. Marsala is by far the most wearable of the bunch, which leads to the question, what inspired it?
Already on the minds of many are Kylie Jenner’s lips. Famed for her matte pout, Marsala is definitely within the right shade range to help any admirers imitate the look.
The red muddy tone is also perfectly in line with the 90’s trend that’s been present in the fashion industry lately. And if you take a look at Kylie Jenner’s Instagram, you’ll see that she is very much so inspired by the 90’s. Has her influence reached the fashion forecasters over at Pantone?
We don’t know much else about how their annual colors are chosen since all of this happens in a top secret meeting, but if we’re left to guess, we’re pretty sure that most colors are influenced by the quickly ever changing landscape of social media.
With powerful influencers such as Kylie Jenner inadvertently creating trends of their own, it’s no surprise that corporations are beginning to look to the millennials for inspiration.
So although Marsala may not be the prettiest color out there, it definitely is one of the most wearable and we can definitely see it sticking around for awhile even after the following year’s color has been announced. Even better, you most likely already own a lip color similar to this in your treasure chest of a make up collection.
