The Pumpkin Spice Devil

PSL in

Autumn. It’s that time of year again; tis the season of circle scarves, dark lipstick, and the highly anticipated return of the coveted Starbucks pumpkin spice latte. We can always count on Starbucks to be located on every block of the city, have clean bathrooms, and sell us overpriced but super trendy drinks. With over 200 million cups of pumpkin spice sold to date, there’s clearly a special place in every girl’s heart for the PSL.

It’s pretty much the epitome of autumn. Your Starbucks drink is virtually an accessory in itself that goes with any fall outfit. #TBT when you were strutting down the halls of your high school– buggy sunglasses on with your dad’s Mercedes keys dangling in hand and the steaming mammoth-sized pumpkin spiced latte you grabbed on your spare. Leggings as pants, Jennifer Lawrence, Marilyn Monroe quotes, and a PSL to top it all off: the basic girl’s dream. But before you splurge on your 7th cup of the season, we have some bad news…

Calorie NOT wise

A venti with whipped cream has a whopping 510 calories and 20 grams of fat, 12 grams of them being saturated fat. The insanely high calorie content of this drink makes us wonder why we don’t just grab for a big juicy burger…

“Pumpkin”

Where’s the pumpkin? After reading the ingredients in a pumpkin spiced latte, it’s safe to say there is absolutely no pumpkin in this drink. What? Instead, you’ll be drinking:

Mountains of Sugar: a venti contains 62 grams of sugar. Are we getting buzzed from the caffeine or are my hands shaking from a sugar-high?

Monsanto Milk: Starbucks continues to reject the use of organic milk in their drinks. The milk they currently add to drinks comes from cows that are fed genetically modified feed fueling Monsanto and other biotech corporations. The fact Starbucks is using milk from cows fed with GMO corn, soy, and cottonseed is udderly despicable.

Caramel Color Level IV: coloring with no nutritional benefits and only used to cosmetically improve the color of your drink is made with ammonia and considered a carcinogen. Damn science, you scary!

Artificial Flavors: Starbucks actually has not released the complete list of ingredients for the pumpkin spice latte. The pumpkin spice flavored sauce is described by them to contain “natural and artificial flavors” so we’re never really going to know what these flavors are. Starbucks you acting kinda shady…

So the truth is out… kinda. We are totally sure about the large sum of money we’re paying Starbucks but not entirely in the know about what exactly we are putting into our bodies.

Since August of 2012, there have been over 29,000 tweets with the hashtag #PumpkinSpice, but maybe we should start a new one like #PumpkinSpiceControversy or #ShadyStarbucks or #MultinationalDevils? Regardless of how trendy this beverage is, we should really think before we drink.

Tell us:

Will Starbuck’s lack of transparency influence the next time you purchase a drink from them?
