Reasons Why We Love Mindy Kaling

1. Her full name is Vera Mindy Chokalingam

Her mother actually named her Mindy after the sitcom, Mork and Mindy, deciding that it was a “cute American” name for her daughter.

2. She’s an actor, comedian, writer and executive producer

Mindy played Kelly Kapoor in The Office on which she also wrote, produced and directed various episodes. Mindy also plays Mindy Lahiri in her very own show, The Mindy Project that she also coproduces, directs and writes. She’s even been in some movie favorites including The 40 Year Old Virgin, No Strings Attached, Wreck-It Ralph and This is the End.

3. She gave the Harvard Law School class day speech of 2014

Mindy Kaling was asked to speak to the Harvard Law School class of 2014 and addressed them as “nerds.”

“Listen, let me tell you something. From where I stand, from an outsider’s perspective, here’s the truth: You are all nerds.”

4. She has her own book.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) debuted in 2011 and features witty observations Mindy has made in her life.

5. She’s funny and so are her tweets.

6. She’s BFFs (in the most complicated way) with BJ Novak

BJ and Mindy met when they were both writing for The Office, where they played on-again, off-again partners. They’re also best friends in real life, and it’s the cutest thing ever.

7. She loves her body despite not falling under a Hollywood size 2

Mindy was asked to be on the cover of a February 2014 issue of Elle Magazine where she was featured in a “Women in TV” issue. The cover featured her face instead of her full body like past issues had been, creating controversy that it was because of her curvaceous physique. Of course Mindy’s response to the debate was anything less from funny.

She has also written in her book Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me?:

“I fall into that nebulous, quote-unquote, normal American woman size that legions of fashion stylists detest. For the record, I’m a size 8 — this week, anyway. Many stylists hate that size because I think to them, it shows that I lack the discipline to be an ascetic; or the confident, sassy abandon to be a total fatty hedonist.”

8. She is a role model and isn’t afraid to speak her mind

“I get angry with people in the public eye who say they’re not a role model, and they don’t want people to look up to them. Because it’s incorrect. It’s important for me to be someone people look up to — most directly, minority girls who want to do what I do. Maybe it’s narcissistic, but I think it’s important.”

9. She’s proud to be a successful woman of color

Mindy has constantly stood up for herself being a successful woman of color in Hollywood. During one interview at this year’s SXSW, she was asked if it was “a conscious decision for Mindy to be the only female doctor, and the only doctor color of the show.” Mindy responded with a bold and daring, “I look at shows on TV, and this is going to just seem defensive, but I’m just gonna say it: I’m a fucking Indian woman who has her own fucking network television show, OK?”

Mindy has also stated that she’s not interested in being self-categorized into a smaller group of being an Indian female comedian. She doesn’t want to have any labels define her or her work as she believes that she is just as funny as the best white, male comedy writer out there. You go Mindy!
