Everyone loves donuts. Grandmothers, dads, sisters, cousins, friends, everyone. We’ve all tried those typical, super sugary ones from our childhood: maple swirl, strawberry jam, sprinkles, double chocolate, etc. But what we haven’t tried, are savoury donuts. Everyone thinks donuts are for people with sweet teeth. Nope- it’s also for the foodies that want to feel like they’re eating a real meal. Here are 10 weird, but potentially awesome donut flavours we want to try in our lifetime.
1. Foies Gras
If you don’t know what a ‘foies gras’ is, you’re probably going to think this is a sweet donut. Sorry, but it’s the total opposite. This donut is stuffed with fatted goose liver instead of jelly. Talking about bringing gourmet into fast food. It costs $11 and if you dare to try it, and you can find it in Brooklyn, Do or Dine.
2. Fried Chicken
Yeah, we said it. Fried chicken. Just think about that crispy deep fried skin when you bite into the breaded donut. We feel like it might taste similar to a fried chicken sandwich. We’re not complaining! If you don’t like your chicken plain, it comes with a spicy honey maple sauce. You can find this at Glazed Donut Bistro for $7.
3. Mac & Cheese
Okay, this is definitely a blessing from the donut gods. It’s a beignet stuffed with mac and cheese. But don’t worry, the cheese isn’t cold. It’s warm, melted, gooey, scrumptious. It makes our mouths water as we think about it. This has to be the ultimate comfort food. If your girlfriend had a break up, get her the donut and you can skip the ice cream and chocolate. If you feel like you’re craving, you can find it at Glazed Donut Bistro for $7.
4. Boss Hog
One word: meat. This donut is sure to fill you up. It’s a regular donut with pork and potato salad piled up. To bring it all together, there is honey BBQ sauce drizzled on top. When you look at it, it actually looks like a full on meal. For $6.50 at Gourdough‘s, we van vouch that it’s worth it.
We totally wish we could get drunk off eating donuts. That would be awesome. Too bad, we’d get a stomach ache before that happens. Dough in Brooklyn has Mojito donuts with mint leaves or $2.50. Hello, big deal! It’s glazed with Mojito frosting and finished with a candied mint. Apparently it tastes just like the drink, yumm!
6. Grilled cheese
Everyone’s guilty pleasure. Just imagine that warm, stringy cheese, oozing out of the crispy donut. At Tom and Chee, they have 9 different grilled cheese donuts. They range from gouda to mozzarella. There are also additional toppings like marshmallow, blueberry, peanut butter, lemon, etc. Toppings you’d never imagine with cheese! If you’re feeling adventurous, you definitely need to check it out.
Okay. We’re not going to lie, this donut looks like an alien pooped it out. dark and spotted on the outside, and bright, spongey purple on the inside. If you get past the colours, it actually looks quite nice. Crispy and sugary on the outside with a soft and moist inside. This donut is made from taro root. So that means if you like taro, this is your thing! Check out Kamehameha Bakery to get it for only $0.90-1.00.
8. Spice Salsa Surprise
At first glance, this donut looks like a crazy mish mash of flavours. Like all donuts, it has a glaze on top. But instead of leaving it as that, Mad Over Donuts sprinkles herbs and dried chilies on top. But it doesn’t stop there. In the usual donut hole, there is a bed of cheese at the bottom, and spicy salsa on top. Sounds pretty damn crazy to us. But you know what they say: the weirdest things are always the best tasting things.
9. Salt & Vinegar
Mmmm, salt and vinegar popco-.. Wait. Donuts?! The brand Weirdough from Tesco sells it in packages. They’re little mini donuts. Now, this just sounds flat out strange to us. I guess the name suits it well. It also comes in cheese and onion. I guess they really like popcorn flavours. Well, we feel like this is worth a try. If it tastes good on popcorn, maybe it will taste good on donuts?! Anyone with us?
10. Pizza Donuts
We all know what this is. We all know this will taste good for sure. Who on earth would hate pizza? No one. Even if they don’t like the fatty pizzas sold in most stores, they probably make their own healthy versions! Kirbie’s Cravings knows what’s up. They shared a super easy recipe. All you really need is the Pilsbury dough and toppings. Stores probably sell it already made pizza donuts, but who wants to turn down a chance to customize their own for cheap?!
What’s the weirdest donut you’ve had?
